26 Promotions – Tucson, AZ – (April 15, 2019) – A new track surface at Tucson Speedway forced Arizona native, Cody Cambensy, to battle adversity to earn a second-place finish Saturday night with the NASCAR Thunder Truck Series.

The weekend kicked off first with a test session on Friday night where drivers struggled to get a grip on the changes made to the speedway.

“The truck was extremely tight and I was struggling to get a good handle with the new surface,” explained Cambensy. “Saturday’s practice went much better with some changes made to the truck. With help from Brandon Farrington, we got the truck back to feeling more comfortable and ended up third fastest on old tires.”

Cambensy would be the 15th truck to roll out to qualify and pick up his third quick time in a row with a lap time of 16.886 seconds.

“With the track surface playing a big role, it was hard to judge what adjustments to make,” said Cambensy. “After a call to Dustin Ash, we made one final adjustment to the truck before the feature.”

After taking the lead early, Cambensy would open up a four-second advantage on the field in just 12 laps. Disaster came on lap 13, however, as Cambensy would blow a right-front tire while leading. He would then come into the pit area to make a tire change before returning to the track marred back to the 19th position for the restart.

“The truck was not handling like it did before,” continued Cambensy. “With some bold moves and fender banging, we made it back to second-place. On the final restart, I made a final run to try and battle for the win with my teammate, Brandon Farrington, but was only able to keep pace for a few laps before the right-front tire got too hot.”

Upon finishing the race, it was discovered that the tire failure was caused by the track surface coming apart. The same failure happened to a number of other cars during the night and caused the track to cancel the rest of the festivities for the evening for safety reasoning.

“It’s hard to lose a race due to something out of our control like the track coming apart and causing us to lose a tire after having a dominant truck,” said a disappointed Cambensy. “Overall, it was great to rebound to come back from 19th in just 15 laps to finish second. We passed a lot of cars and made some good points up. I am glad they decided to cancel the rest of the night with all of the tire problems going on. I would like to give a big thank you to TMI for all of the support, as well as Brandon Farrington, Josh Hitchiner, Terry Sukaski, Dustin Ash, Jason Esry, and all of my sponsors”

Cody Cambensy would like to thank Temperature Control, Davis Motorsports, Grace Boutique, Wells Johnson, Port of Tucson, Fiveone Media, and AZ Litho for their support.
