26 Promotions – Peoria, AZ – (April 3, 2019) – The reigning Arizona Micro Sprint champion, Paul Martin, kept consistency in mind Friday and Saturday night during the Sunset Showdown at the famed Canyon Speedway Park.
The black and red No. 1AZ started the weekend off on Friday with a six-lap heat race which would ultimately determine the starting lineup for the Micro Sprint portion of the Sunset Showdown during night number one. Rolling off from the fifth position with just six laps to make up as many positions as possible is a tough task, but Martin took to it without any doubt, making it up to finish second.
That second place heat race finish was good enough to make the redraw, allowing Martin to fire off from the third position in the feature.
“I took the lead on lap two,” said Martin, “but it was called back after a caution flew. We regained the lead and were out front for about four laps when the 41 car got by me on the top. The car went really loose about halfway and we ended up finishing second.”
Saturday’s show allowed Martin to return to Canyon Speedway Park with a clear head, and he immediately went to work to try to increase his finishing position by one from the night prior. Unfortunately, the heat race proved difficult and Martin would slip from the pole to finish third.
A deeper heat race result meant that Martin would have even more cars to get around during the 20-lap feature as he would have to start from the ninth position. The inside of row number five wouldn’t be his home for long, though, as Martin methodically worked his way around traffic and avoided a three-car tangle that would pull the caution with single digits left to run in the feature.
"I was able to avoid contact when 3 cars were taken out in an incident and lined up third with about 4 (laps) to go and brought it home for a podium finish in third place,” said Martin. “It was a great weekend scoring two podium finishes.”
