26 Promotions – Braselton, GA – (March 25, 2019) – Tim Smith snuck by Coy Pennington coming out of turn two on the final lap to secure the NORA 360 Nationals Prelim night two victory at Lanier National Speedway.
It would be Pennington who would set the pace early, leading the first 23 trips around the three-eighths-mile oval as Smith and Brett Wheeler battled it out for second behind him.
“I never would have expected to hold off Tim and Brett as long as I did, especially knowing that they’re both fast,” explained Pennington. “I was just holding on and trying to do what I could. I held on for all but one lap and Tim got by me. I’m probably feeling over-confident heading into tomorrow, but it’s good confidence to have known that I did this well.”
Smith, a driver out of the KKR Sim Team stable, traded the lead back and forth with Pennington over the final two laps, but it was Smith’s ability to run the high line that allowed him to get by Pennington on the final lap as the two raced for the victory down the backstretch.
“The track was really weird the whole feature, normally here you can put it right on the cushion on entry and it rails you around the corner,” described Smith. “It seemed like four or five laps in a row I put it right up there and caught too much of the fence and gave the lead back to [Pennington], but it worked out in the end.”
Smith, Pennington, and Wheeler secured the podium spots for prelim night two with Brandon Steele and Benjamin Hickman rounding out the top five.
Championship night of the NORA 360 Nationals begins tomorrow night at 8 PM EST with coverage carried live by Full Velocity TV.
