Cory Whitworth Wins NORA 360 Nationals Night One at Lanier National Speedway

26 Promotions – Braselton, GA – (March 24, 2019) – Cory Whitworth held off a hard charge from Dustin Griffiths in the closing laps to claim night one of the National Oval Racing Association 360 Nationals from Lanier National Speedway.

Grabbing the opening night win from the inside of the second row, Whitworth battled pole-sitter Nicholas McGeathy throughout the first half of the race. The two traded sliders through three and four on lap 18 and again in turns one and two on lap 19. Whitworth took the lead heading into turn three as the two made contact down the backstretch.

“McGeathy was way better than we were and I knew my only shot at a win was to wait until a restart and try to find his weak spot getting in and drive a little deeper and try to put a slide job on him,” explained Whitworth “We did that and it was clean and he got back by me with a slide job. He entered the corner a little lower in one and two than he needed to and stayed in the slick. I had the car above him and he just kind of skated up the track a little bit and we made contact. I got on the brakes to try to keep both of us out of the wall, I wasn’t trying to wreck while running in a transfer spot.”

The final seven laps would see Dustin Griffitts, who had charged to the front him the tail of the field, challenge Whitworth for the race lead. Griffitts hugged the bottom of the track while Whitworth continued to rail the top, but the battle was short lived as the caution flew with four to go ending the race under caution, giving Whitworth the night one victory.

“We had the wrong setup on the car, so we threw something together and I was way looser than I needed to be especially up against the wall,” said Whitworth. “Stuff just kind of fell my way and we were able to get it.”

Whitworth was joined on the podium by Griffitts and Brian Powell. Adam Teves advanced from 13th to fourth with Brent Hobson rounding out the top-five from 14th.

The National Oval Racing Association’s 360 Nationals continue tomorrow with live coverage carried by Full Velocity TV.
