26 Promotions – Tucson, AZ – (October 30, 2018) – After claiming the Rookie of the Year title to start the month, Cody Cambensy looked to close out October and the 2018 NASCAR Super Truck season with a championship title at Tucson Speedway.
“We tested on Friday night and had motor problems, but we were able to get it fixed on Saturday morning,” explained Cambensy. “We went out for practice on Saturday and were able to lay down some great laps that put us second quick. I was pretty happy knowing that we would be running 175-lap old tires that night.”
Cambensy entered Saturday night’s Grand Finale event 34-points behind in the championship standings, but the point structure would give him a shot at the title if things broke his way.
“With no qualifying, they inverted the top eight in points. We had a lot of work to do if we wanted to win the championship, but we had a shot if things played into our favor. We had 20 trucks racing with three-points per position plus passing points,” he explained. “Heading to tech before the race our sway bar broke and we had to scramble to get it fixed. Terry and Skyler went to work while I was setting the tire pressure. We got it fixed and made it through tech.”
With the motor issues from Friday behind them and the sway bar fixed, Cambensy lined up on the inside of the fourth row for the start of the 30-lap feature.
“When the green flag dropped racing went three and four wide from first through tenth. It was a pretty close, tight race and probably the closest we’ve raced all year,” he said. “We were pretty log jammed and stuck on the bottom for about 15-laps. We even had to use our bumper a few times to try and get a lane. The truck was already free and then began to get looser the longer we were stuck on the bottom.”
Fighting a loose truck, Cambensy was still able to work his way up to fifth and began battling for fourth and third as the laps wound down.
“With the 24-truck slipping back, I knew I had to get a few more spots or a caution to have a shot at the championship, but we ended up running out of laps and coming up short,” said Cambensy. “We finished fifth making that our 14th top-five finish of the year and we only finished outside of the top-five once this year. With 18-plus car counts all year that was still a great season.”
Cambensy finishes 2018 with two wins and 14 top-five finishes in 15 races this year.
“I am extremely happy with our season, and it was great to even have a shot at the title. I missed the set up in the truck but was happy to finish with another top-five,” he said. “With no cautions, it was not an easy race, and the competition was great. Congrats to my teammate, Daniel Doherty, on his second championship! I also need to thank Brad and Joann for the opportunity to drive for them. It’s been a great year and our team will rebuild and get ready to chase a title next season.”
