26 Promotions – Tucson, AZ – (October 2, 2018) – Cody Cambensy scored his 13th NASCAR Super Truck top-five finish of the year Saturday at Tucson Speedway’s Empire CAT Night.
“Saturday was one crazy day,” explained Cambensy. “I had to be at a wedding about 40 miles away and had to go back and forth from the track. The guys had the car ready for me, but I had to miss practice.”
Cambensy arrived at the track just before qualifying to find that the truck was too low as it rolled through tech.
“The truck had been tied down in the trailer for a week, so that caused the springs and shocks to settle too much,” he said. “With this happening, NASCAR only gave us one lap to qualify. With all the chaos the guys didn’t get the sway bar set, and we went out to qualify with no pre-load. The truck was extremely hard to drive and gave us our worst qualifying run of the year, which put us way behind the eight ball.”
Cambensy officially qualified 10th quick. Following his qualifying run, Cambensy would leave the track to attend the remainder of the wedding as the crew set up the truck for the 25-lap feature.
“We had to start the race in 12th, and as soon the green flag dropped we got through some traffic pretty quick,” he said. “The truck lacked forward drive, so it took a few laps to get to fourth, and we just didn’t have enough time to catch the leaders. I think if a caution had come out we could have given the leaders a run for their money.”
With his fourth-place finish, Cambensy secured the Rookie of the Year title and currently sits second in the NASCAR Super Truck points at Tucson Speedway, 34-points out of first with one race left.
“We were able to get another top-five, and that keeps us close for the championship,” he said. “I’m really disappointed about qualifying, but that’s racing. I really can’t thank the guys for busting their butts as I was only at the track long enough to drive the truck. I know the championship is going to be hard, but I know we have the team and truck that can win the next race.”
Cambensy closes out the NASCAR Super Truck season on October 13th at Tucson Speedway.
